Flexibility

Why Soft Seating? Part II

At Fōmcore we’ve always believed that learning happens everywhere. Ideas don’t wait until you are seated “properly,” and the muse isn’t cued to only share her creativity when you are “in session.” You might be sitting with a group on the floor when a peer shares a fantastic idea, or you may be gathered in a third space when a colleague offers an insight sparking a new way of thinking.

In our everyday learning spaces, flexibility frees students from restrictive forms of seating; instead, they’re able to move about the classroom as needed while discovering new ways to learn.

The flexibility of our soft seating provides these opportunities for engaged learning no matter where you are. In our everyday learning spaces, flexibility frees students from restrictive forms of seating; instead, they’re able to move about the classroom as needed while discovering new ways to learn. Pieces like our Lily Pads give students a comfortable and mobile seat for reading. Different parts of the Daisy Set can be pushed together for collaboration or used in separate spaces. Because each of our pieces is designed with this flexibility in mind, students are given the opportunity to play a more active role in their own learning.

In an article entitled “Flexible Seating: Let’s Get the Wiggles Out”, Patricia Anderson and Marie Hartley examine the advantages and disadvantages of implementing flexible seating in the classroom. They state that in combination with solid classroom management strategies, flexible seating can be extremely beneficial for both collaborative and individual learning: “When students find the environment comfortable, they generally demonstrate more engagement which then leads to greater achievement. Flexible seating makes it easy to arrange students for group work and encourages working together” (2019). When flexible seating is intentionally used as a tool for learning, it increases opportunities for peer-to-peer collaboration and valuable classroom interaction.

Engagement and discovery can happen at a moment’s notice, and Fōmcore is glad to provide furniture giving maximum flexibility to be used however and wherever needed. Learning happens everywhere, and we’re grateful that we can help create the spaces where ideas come to life.
